Public Housing Rua da Verónica

Year: 2022
Location: Lisboa, Portugal
Stage: Competition 2nd prize
In collaboration with Grazzini Tonazzini Colombo
Client: Lisboa Ocidental SRU

A project that aims towards infilling an urban block and provided a new shared green space.

Having in consideration the proposed challenge, the project focuses on solving urban limits in the dense urban fabric of São Vicente (Graça). These limits present themselves in a multitude of dualities: public and private, collective and individual, communal and intimate.

The proposal focuses on infilling an urban void in the São Vicente neighbourhood and conceptualising a public park to the rear, while also establishing a new connection to the Palácio Sinel de Cordes. The proposed urban mass consists of a broken volume, which develops along the steep slope of Rua da Verónica. The base typology is a 10 by 5-metre rectangle, which functions as a general normative tool for the project as well as a simple response to the construction cost problem. At the junction of the two volumes, a double height arch serves as the entrance portico and the link between the street, the new garden and the flats.

The proposal provides 32 new housing units and positions itself in-between the front and the back, the neighbourhood and the block, the private and public, the social and the intimate, in-between quatro paredes caiadas.
