The intervention aims to integrate a forgotten and derelict piece of city. In order to achieve a cohesion of both new construction and urban regeneration, the project relies on using shared external spaces - common courtyards and pedestrian streets - to unify all volumes.
The old is treated as a ‘found’ element, restoring facades and relevant building elements that are now in need of care. A new gesture at the back, a common courtyard, provides external space to all flats whilst it also guarantees a future lot division if necessary. The new defines a new urban junction, celebrating the main entrance and public street corner with two panes of reflective glazed tiles. A new courtyard mediates between public and private, fostering shared relations between residents.
The project delivers 16 cooperative rent controlled flats along with external shared spaces, a relatively new typology in central Lisbon.
